The one day that changed everything
Posted on
This is the Glecksteinhütte near Grindelwald, Switzerland. Unfortunately, I never made it up there (the photos were taken by my wife) - read here why.
Exactly 10 years ago (13 July 2013), a friend of my wife visited us in Switzerland. We wanted to do something special, so we decided to hike up the Wetterhorn towards the mountain hut of the Glecksteinhütte and spend the night there. It was described as “one of the most impressive mountain trails”, so that was the perfect thing to do with our guest.
The route seemed manageable, labelled as "easily accessible by train and bus" followed by a "mountain path to the hut." Even families with kids under 10 seem to be able to do it, so we were confident we could do it too.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t. I was suffering from allergies, asthma and polyps. I started hiking but had difficulty breathing. Fortunately, I had my asthma spray with me and had another dose (and another one), but that didn’t help either. I took a few steps and was out of breath again, so I had to stop. After a while, I had to realise I wouldn’t be able to make it that day, so I turned back and went down to Grindelwald where we started, the 2 girls continued to hike up to the mountain hut.
I went back home alone and knew immediately I had to change something. I just turned 30 that year and could not do a hike that even would be suitable for families. That was scary, but even more frightening was to realise that this was only getting worse if I don’t make any changes.
So, I started to gather information about allergies and asthma, their causes and possible solutions. I started looking around for doctors that would not only treat the symptoms - I was given cortisone tablets, cortisone injections and so on by different doctors that would help for a couple of months, for the conditions to come back even worse after that. I found one that was able to help and take care of me. We tried different things - but something I had to change immediately was my diet. I never realised that my diet might have an impact, so I didn’t really care. I had to change now and started to eat much more fresh and homemade food, much more healthily, and one of the things to change was to reduce sugary products. That was when I started making my own jams, using much more fruit and less sugar to make them better and more suitable for me. I kept making them over the years, and now this actually turned into Mór Taste eventually.
Looking back on this event is actually quite strange. It was a day that I wanted to forget for a long time. Now, it actually seems like the turning point, leading to a healthier life but also creating a business opportunity many years later. It’s exactly 10 years ago today, so I just want to share it. Things might not look great one day, but they might be the start of something new. The most important thing for me was to stay positive, and believe that I have things in my own hands.
